Hydrogen 1-1 |
Periodic Table of the Elements
|
Chemical Symbol: H Mass: 1.00794 amu Chemical Group: nonmetal Appearance: Colorless State at Room Temperature: Gas Hydrogen is probably my
favorite element, probably cause its one of the first elements I
experimented with and that is so interesting. Hydrogen is the lightest
element on earth, contains 1 proton, 1 electron, and 0 neutrons.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, making up over 90% of
other molecules. As you can probably remember from grade school, it is
the main element in H20 (water). Since hydrogen is lighter than
air it floats; that being said one of its original uses was in balloons and
blimps. Seemed like a great idea right? Not so much a great idea.
Hydrogen is highly explosive and on May 6, 1937 a German blimp filled with
hydrogen, named the Hindenburg, exploded killing 35 of the 95 people on
board. So when dealing with this chemical you must be very careful.
Luckily since hydrogen is so abundant its relatively easy to obtain. The
experiment on the next page uses dangerous chemicals to obtain it
though so I urge you to take great caution and to always where your goggles
and chemical resistant gloves. |
